2018 Ohio Youth-Led Prevention Network Adult Allies Summit
Time & Location
About the Event
Today’s young people are bright and full of passion. They’re working to make their homes, schools, and communities safe and healthy places to live and learn. As Adult Allies, it’s our job to empower them to achieve their goals by helping them create community-level change, build youth resilience, and change social norms.
Prevention Action Alliance, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and Ohio University’s Voinovich School, is hosting the fifth annual Ohio Youth-Led Prevention Network Adult Allies Summit. This year’s theme is Creating Opportunities for Youth to Lead: Evidence-Based Strategies for Addressing Complex Social Issues.
The Adult Allies Summit will discuss the important role you play as an adult ally and will share information on exciting developments in youth-led prevention (YLP) in Ohio. You will hear from experts on topics such as how to use evidence-based strategies to create change at the micro- and macro-level, prevention for LGBTQ+ students, and changing social norms.
The goal of YLP in Ohio is for young people to engage in a data-driven strategic planning process to identify and implement evidence-based prevention strategies to create community change. Youth-led programs are a community-based process (Hogan, Gabrielsen, Luna & Grothaus, 2003) in which young people determine a problem of practice, identify the root causes of the problem, and select and implement evidence-based strategies to address those root causes.
Adult Allies are critical to the success of YLP because they assist young people in developing the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to create community-level change. The goal of the Adult Allies Summit is to provide an opportunity for adults to gain skills in empowering youth to work collectively to create change and improve the mental and behavioral health of Ohio’s young people.
