About the coaster project
The Suicide Prevention Coaster Project is an idea born from the Suicide Prevention Committee of the Montgomery County Prevention Coalition. The project started in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height and the committee was searching for ways to reach the Montgomery County community without being physically present. Mental health disorders were increasing and the committee was concerned that social isolation would cause suicide numbers to increase, as well. As restaurants and bars started to reopen, the committee saw the coaster project as a way to provide mental health support to their employees and patrons. We wanted to reach those who may be struggling themselves, but also encourage others to be vigilant and check on their family and friends. We disseminated 5,000 coasters over just a few months.

In 2022, the Coaster Project was recreated and updated with new resources. We also teamed up with the GEM Project (Goal=Everyone Matters), an organization that hosts an art project for high school students to create suicide prevention messaging. It is this artwork, from local Montgomery County students, you will see on the back of many of our coasters.
